Candidate Profile: Rygor Kastusev

Rygor Kastusev, 53, is a member of the Belarusian Popular Front. He graduated from the Belarusian State Agricultural Academy and later worked as an engineer and director of a Belarusian-Ukrainian company.

He was also a regional council member. During the presidential campaign in 2006, he was a registered representative of the united opposition candidate, Alyaksandr Milinkevich. Kastusev collected signatures of supporters under the historical white-red-white flag, which had been adopted by the opposition, harking back to the period after the declaration of independence in 1991. In 1995, the current official flag was introduced, incorporating symbols more reminiscent of Soviet times. One of his registered representatives is Mikalai Autuchovich, a political prisoner.
