Candidate Profile: Mikola Statkevich

Statkevich, a 54-year-old retired rocket scientist, is leader of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party.

In 2006, he was recognized as a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International after being sentenced to three years in a labor camp for organizing protests against a widely denounced 2004 referendum that lifted term limits on Lukashenka. He was released under an amnesty in May 2007.
